Stuffies
Without sewing skills, I upcycle socks, to create stuffed beings. The process is completely spontaneous and organic, a conversation with color and form, where strong personalities evolve.
When I first started making these, I didn’t take them seriously, as my “work”. I received feedback that people loved them, their quirkiness, their attitude, their diverse personalities. I had been fighting the urge to make them, however the responses I got encouraged me to continue the journey. Some of my hesitance came from the art world’s attitude of disrespect for fiber art, “women’s work”. Thankfully this has been changing over the years. “Stuffies” are “cute”, but also weird, and their strangeness gives them superpowers. Allowing them to inhabit drawings and paintings has been quite an engaging adventure. I enjoy the process of living on the edge, creatively, not knowing what’s going to happen. That’s what keeps it lively. And… yes, I did have an imaginary playmate when I was a child.
